Any magnetic moment that does exist probably was fixed in place when t. The moon has no appreciable magnetic field so a compass would align itself with what ever transient magnetic fields happened to be nearby. There are regions of varying magnetism but these are really weak and they are scattered around the moon.

Will a magnetic compass work on the moon. The moon has no planet wide magnetic field like the earth does. As a result there is no pole for the magnetic compass with. In other words if you took a compass to the moon it might just poin. The moon has a very weak magnetic field but it is not strongly dipolar as with the earth.

While the moon does have a magnetic field which is the force that makes a compass work its much weaker than the magnetic field here on earth. But that field is not dipolar. And even if you could find a compass sensitive enough to work with the moons weak magnetic field it still wouldnt be much use as a navigational aid. A compass works by aligning itself with the earths magnetic field.

The reason being that the moon does not have much if any of a molten iron rich core. There is a weak magnetic field on the moon 100 times weaker than on the earth. A magnetic compass does not work on the moon because the moon has no magnetic core to generate the north and south poles like the earth. So even if the compass is fine enough to work in such weak magnetic field anyway it would be useless.
